Tripura in UNICEF' strategic meet on gender

Agartala, Jul 28, 2010 : The UNICEF has invited Census officials of eight Indian states including Tripura in open house strategic discussion on Gender Mainstreaming at Delhi on July 30 next.

Director Census (Tripura) Dilip Acharjee here said besides Tripura, West Bengal, Haryana, Delhi, Kerala, Maharashtra, Orissa and Chandigarh were invited for formulation of strategy to mainstreaming the women folk.



“UNICEF identified infant, girl-child, elderly domestic help as most vulnerable groups in these states of India and the discussion would be on marriage age of girls, women literacy and participation of women in decision making process and combat immigration and migration of women from and to different states,” Acharjee said.

Referring Census record Acharjee maintained that Tripura had some report of migration of girl-child from south and north Tripura in connection with marriage and seasonal emigration of labourers from Jharkhand and Bihar for brick industries but the situation was not grim in compare to other states of the country.

He also added that the Tripura had already taken steps to ensure political and economic participation of the women in family and other spectrums of governance. The state has already introduced 50 percent reservation for women in all political institutions early this year and last three-tire Panchayat election more 35 percent of women got elected.
