Joygobinda calls for dynamism in environment ednBy Our CorrespondentAgartala, Jul 30, 2010 : Environment Minister Joy Gobinda Debroy called upon the teachers to undertake initiatives for making environmental education more interesting and dynamic rather influencing them in rat-race for scoring marks.
He was addressing the gathering in Bijoy Kumar Girls’ HS School in National Environmental Awareness Campaign (NEAC) being organized by leading nature advocacy group ARPAN.
Debroy said that the traditional education system would not be appropriate for generating awareness of environment among the school students.
With the advent of development of science and technology the model of teaching had also got changed and teachers were needed to be updated themselves with the transformation of teaching method.
Founder President of ARPAN Prof Amitava Sinha pointed out that scoring mark in the examination might be the target for other subjects but not for environment science because it needs devotion and love to the subject.
“Unless both teacher and student are not interested to save the environment nothing will happen with seminar or campaign”, he added.
Talking in the occasion ARPAN Secretary Biswendu Bhattacharjee urged the teachers to act as an agent for changing the attitude and behavior of students as far as protection of environment is concerned.
He highlighted that most of the cases teachers were saying something in the class and doing reverse in the outside and that was also monitored by the students, which became dangerous for the environment education. As a result, even after 38 years of recognition of world environment day Indian states have been talking the same issues.
“If teachers are not coming up leaving aside their mere so called professional attitude environment – social, natural, mental and economic will suffer in future too,” Bhattacharjee added.
ARPAN had organized quiz competition and dialogue on environment among the students and conducted energy audit in the school as part of NEAC.
