TSR to provide security in C’wealth Games

Agartala, Jul 30, 2010 : Union Home Ministry has requisitioned elite combatants of Tripura State Rifles (TSR) to provide security cover during the ensuing Commonwealth Games in New Delhi.

Official sources said, for prestigious Commonwealth Games, massive numbers of security forces would be deployed across the country’s capital for tight security. The TSR jawans –who have already earned nationwide kudos for their professional abilities pertaining to security-would be part of the Commonwealth Games security apparatus. They would be deployed along other Central Para-Military Forces (CPMF).

Police sources said, a total of 492 jawans from six companies of 9th, 6th and 5th TSR battalions would be going to New Delhi in September first week. OK Koshuliya, Commandant of TSR 7th battalion would be commanding the TSR posse.

A total of 164 jawans from each of three Indian Reserve (IR) TSR battalions would be selected. They would be staying in Delhi for 35 days till the end of the Commonwealth games.

Out of 13 existing TSR battalions nine battalions are Indian Reserve (IR) force and they can be deployed any parts of the country for security matters.

Earlier, on last May TSR jawans were deployed in West Bengal and in Kolkata for civic poll duties. At that time the Tripura combatants came to national limelight as one of the ruling CPM activists was killed in a TSR firing.

The India Reserve Battalions of the TSR were requisitioned for the West Bengal and other parts of the country keeping in mind the force’s success in fighting Tripura militancy and toughness in containing violence.
